Table with an array of tacos, cheeses, and cremas, with a mexican blanket and orange flowers

Día De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead,) is a Mexican holiday that honors those we have lost– by celebrating their spirits and stories that live on. The traditions for this holiday are colorful and meaningful– And spread over the span of two days (because there’s just so much to do!). From November 1st through November 2nd, you can take an auténtico deep-dive into a world of marigolds, sugar skulls and incredible foods shared over stories of the loved ones we honor.

The first thing to know is that its tradition to create altars for the departed, beautifully adorned in vibrant colors, candles and the traditional flor de cempasúchil (marigold flowers.) These are believed to help guide the spirits back to the world of the living. Ofrendas (offerings), such as flowers, favorite foods and personal possessions (like our abuela’s favorite mariachi record) are also placed on the altars to encourage the souls of those lost to return home and hear the prayers of the ones who love them.

Both the sugar skull symbol and the story of La Catrina have inspired many art forms, makeup styles and decorations for the holiday— If you’re on the hunt for Día De Los Muertos decor for your home or as a gift, make sure to shop from local Mexican vendors and artists!
